India’s retail inflation surged to 6.07% in February on higher food prices. This is an eight-month high and is above the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) threshold of 6%, data released by the Statistics Ministry on Monday showed.
Retail inflation, which is measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), stood at 6.01% in January. This is the second consecutive time that retail inflation has crossed over the RBI’s upper target of 6%. The government has mandated the central bank to maintain retail inflation at 4% with a margin of 2% on either side for a five-year period ending March 2026.
The CPI data is mainly factored in by the RBI while making its bi-monthly monetary policy.
Meanwhile, the wholesale inflation rose to 13.11% in February, data released by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry showed.
The wholesale price index (WPI) grew 12.96% in January.
The WPI inflation has remained in double-digit for the 11th consecutive month beginning April 2021.
